Transportation in Pai

Pai's transport scene is built for backpackers and motorbike pilgrims. The town itself is tiny, most guesthouses, cafés, and the walking-street market sit within a 10-minute stroll, so walking is the default. When you need wheels, the rental shops on Chaisongkran Road offer 110 cc scooters (cheap, ubiquitous, and the fastest way to reach waterfalls and hot springs). Songthaews (shared red trucks) wait near the bus station and run when enough passengers appear; they're cheaper than a private taxi but slower because they loop through town picking people up. Tuk-tuks exist but are a splurge relative to a scooter and often haggle hard. From Pai's tiny airstrip, the only formal option is the airport minivan that meets each arriving flight and drops at any guesthouse; it's a fraction of a taxi and far easier than trying to flag down a passing songthaew on the access road. If you're coming overland from Chiang Mai, the minivan ride is famously twisty, bring motion-sickness tablets and avoid the back row. Once in town, skip the temptation to rent a big bike for the hills. The 125 cc automatics handle the route to Pai Canyon just fine and cost noticeably less.
